HBCUs in New York Historically Black universities and colleges (HBCUs) have long been at the forefront of providing African American and Black students with high-quality higher education within a vibrant community of peers.
Established during Reconstruction to address legal restrictions that barred Black students from enrolling at white institutions, HBCUs continue producing well-educated people as part of the Black middle class and professionals across multiple fields.
HBCUs can only be found in the South; no university in New York currently offers one of these colleges or universities. Many believe CUNY Medgar Evers in Brooklyn to be an HBCU; in reality.
It falls into another category, known as a primarily Black establishment (PBI), providing similar learning experiences reminiscent of that found within an HBCU, such as student body size, educational opportunities offered, and the cultural background of its student population as an HBCU would.
